How to become a preschool teacher

To become a preschool teacher, finish at least Class 12, take an early childhood course such as a Diploma in ECCE, Nursery Teacher Training or Montessori training, and gain practical experience with young children. Then build a short portfolio of activity and lesson plans and apply to preschools, playschools, nurseries and kindergartens. Graduates can move faster into lead-teacher roles with a PG Diploma in ECCE.

Six steps

  • Check eligibility: Class 10 for an ECCE Certificate, Class 12 for a Diploma, a degree for a PG Diploma.
  • Choose a course: ECCE for the broadest foundation; Montessori or NTT for specific settings.
  • Gain practical experience: volunteer or assist in a preschool, daycare or anganwadi while you study.
  • Build your portfolio: keep your best lesson plans, activity ideas and observation notes.
  • Prepare your documents: certificate, mark sheets, ID, a short CV and references.
  • Apply and demonstrate: many preschools ask for a demo activity, such as a story or rhyme session.

Skills preschools look for

  • Warmth, patience and a calm voice
  • Clear, simple communication with children and parents
  • Planning play-based activities for different ages
  • Storytelling, songs, rhymes and craft
  • Understanding milestones and noticing when a child needs help
  • Hygiene, safety and first-aid awareness
  • Basic computer skills for reports and parent messages

Which course fits you

If you have finished Class 12, the 200-hour Diploma in ECCE is the most common route. Graduates should consider the PG Diploma. If you want to start quickly as an assistant, begin with the Certificate and upgrade later.

Government jobs

Government pre-primary and anganwadi roles follow state recruitment rules and usually need specific regulated qualifications. Check the official notification before you apply.

A day in the life of a preschool teacher

  • Welcome children and parents, and check in on how each child is feeling
  • Lead circle time: greetings, calendar, songs and a short story
  • Run activity corners: art, blocks, sand and water, pretend play
  • Support early language and number play in small groups
  • Supervise snack time, handwashing and rest
  • Outdoor play and movement
  • Note observations and share updates with parents

Your first job interview

Expect questions about why you want to work with young children, how you would handle a crying child or a tantrum, how you keep children safe and how you talk to parents. Many preschools ask for a short demo, so prepare a story, a rhyme with actions and a simple craft.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying without any time spent with groups of young children
  • Bringing a demo that is too long or too complex
  • Ignoring safety and hygiene in interviews
  • Not checking whether a role needs a local licence

Qualifications by route

  • Private preschools and playschools: an ECCE, NTT or Montessori certificate or diploma; a diploma is preferred for teacher roles.
  • International school early years: a degree plus a recognised early years or teaching qualification, and sometimes a licence.
  • Government pre-primary and anganwadi roles: the qualification named in the official recruitment notification.
  • Daycare and creche: a certificate is often enough to start; supervisors usually need a diploma and experience.

How long it takes

With the 120-hour Certificate you can be ready for assistant roles within a few months. With the 200-hour Diploma, most learners take 6 to 10 months part-time. Graduates on the 240-hour PG Diploma usually finish within a year, and many start working as assistants while they study.

Building experience quickly

  • Volunteer two mornings a week at a local preschool or daycare
  • Help at a children's library story hour or Sunday school
  • Run a weekend craft or rhyme session for neighbourhood children (with parents' permission)
  • Assist an anganwadi or community early learning programme
