Early years and preschool teacher requirements by country

Requirements depend on the country and the type of setting. Government posts almost always need a regulated qualification and registration, while private preschools, nurseries and daycares set their own rules and often accept a certificate or diploma in ECCE, especially with experience. International schools usually want a degree plus a recognised teaching qualification. Always check the employer and the local regulator before you enrol.

India

Government pre-primary posts follow state rules and usually need a regulated qualification such as a Diploma in Pre-School Education or D.El.Ed. NEP 2020 sets out ECCE training for anganwadi workers: a six-month certificate for those with Class 12 and a one-year diploma for others. Private playschools and preschools set their own requirements and commonly hire ECCE, NTT and Montessori-trained teachers.

United Arab Emirates

Early childhood centres in Dubai are regulated by the KHDA, and in Abu Dhabi by ADEK. Teachers in licensed centres are generally expected to hold a relevant degree or a recognised early years professional qualification, with assistants needing less. Requirements are updated, so check the regulator's current rules and the centre's advert.

United Kingdom

Early years settings in England follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which covers birth to five. Staff who count in ratios generally need an approved Early Years Educator qualification at Level 3, and teachers in schools need Qualified Teacher Status. An international ECCE certificate does not replace these, but it can support nanny, au pair and assistant roles.

United States

Requirements vary by state and setting. Many preschool roles ask for a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or an associate degree, and public pre-K teachers usually need a bachelor's degree and state licence. Private childcare and nanny roles set their own rules.

Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and the Philippines

  • Kenya: ECDE teachers in public schools are employed through the Teachers Service Commission and need a recognised ECDE teaching qualification and TSC registration.
  • Nigeria: teachers in schools must register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN); private nurseries set their own hiring rules.
  • South Africa: Grade R and ECD practitioners need recognised ECD qualifications on the NQF, and school teachers register with SACE.
  • Philippines: kindergarten teachers in public schools need a teaching licence from the PRC; private preschools and online roles vary.

An honest note on recognition

An online ECCE qualification from a UK training provider is a professional credential. It is widely useful in private early years settings, for parents and caregivers, and as preparation for further study, but it does not replace a national teaching licence or registration where one is required.

Before you enrol: a checklist

  • Which country and type of setting do you want to work in?
  • Is the role regulated (government, licensed centre) or private?
  • What qualification and level does the employer's advert ask for?
  • Do you need a degree for the role or for the visa?
  • Is registration with a teaching council or regulator needed?
  • Will you need police clearance, medical checks or first-aid training?

Where an online ECCE qualification helps most

  • Private preschools, playschools and nurseries
  • Daycare centres and creches
  • Nanny, au pair and private caregiver roles
  • Parents and family caregivers
  • Teachers adding early years skills to an existing qualification

Common documents for jobs abroad

  • Degree and mark sheets, attested where required
  • Early years or teaching certificates
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Medical certificate
  • References from previous employers
  • Passport valid for the visa period

Other common destinations

  • Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain: teacher roles usually need a degree and early years training; nursery assistants and nannies have more flexible requirements.
  • Singapore and Malaysia: registered centres follow national early childhood certification rules.
  • Canada: provinces register early childhood educators for licensed centres.
  • Australia and New Zealand: early childhood teachers need recognised qualifications and registration; assistants need approved certificates.

How to read a job advert

Look for the words 'licensed', 'registered', 'qualified teacher status', 'teaching licence' or a named qualification. These signal a regulated role. Adverts that ask for 'early years training', 'ECCE/NTT/Montessori certificate' or 'experience with young children' are usually open to holders of an online ECCE qualification.
